Combe's just fail to beat both the odds and the mud in the Forest of Dene
Lydney 17 Westcombe Park 13

Following the morning's torrential rain the pitch at Lyney was waterlogged and muddy for Combe's game at Lydney last Saturday and Combe just failed to get the win that would have been their first at Lydney.

Combe pushed all the way in eight try thriller.
Combe may have enjoyed a rare win, but they were pushed all the way by a competitive Richmond side who for their efforts would not be leaving  Goddington Dene empty handed. This was a must win game for each side: for Combe to stop the downward slide, and for Richmond to return to early season form and climb out what is becoming  a very congested  bottom half of the league table. The game had its thrills and spills and the result remained in doubt right up to the final whistle. Daniel Harvey was making his debut at out-half for Combe, and Lindfield was playing his last game. Both had parts to play.

Each coach is fully CRB checked in their home country before being employed by Socious Sports and attends a Child Protection workshop upon arrival in the UK

Thanks to Fraser Thomson Evening – Player & Coach 1980-2009

On Friday 5th February, 2010 nearly 100 ‘Combe gentlemen gathered in a surprise event to celebrate and thank Fraser for 30 years of service to the club.

Although he is not one for big speeches and has always been most humble with regard to his achievements, many of us felt it right to thank him in the only way we knew how - eat curry, drink too much, sing loudly and talk rubbish all night.

However, we added a wee amount of finesse. After speeches from the current President John Ward Turner and past captain Rupert Chitty, Fraser was then presented with a unique Special Edition Club Cap for the years 1980-2009. He was also given a framed replica and Fraser’s ‘All Time Team’, of players he played with or coached over the years, (his wife had gradually extracted these details from Fraser over a 6 month period). This was followed by the highlight of the evening – Fraser’s unplanned response.

The night was a fantastic example of all the great and good that is Westcombe Park RFC, and many people contributed to the success of the evening and we thank you all for your help.

Some photos from the evening are available on the website.
